Gregg  > Architecture > Home Projects > Fireplace/chimney project
We had a Rumford fireplace and bake oven built in our living room, along with a center chimney. The masonry was expertly built by Steve and Paul Dyer of Dyer Masonry Contractors (http://www.dyermasonry.com). They are meticulous in their work and as an added bonus are very funny. Lynda was sorry to see them finish. . . she'd been enjoying having them around. I did all the finish carpentry; framing walls, hanging drywall, building the raised panels, etc. The house now has that smell that's so familiar in eighteenth century New England homes (especially in "home museums" at places like Old Sturbridge Village, Historic York (Maine), etc.) -- woodsmoke. Now after nearly a full winter worth of fires and baking, the bricks are smoke stained and the whole oven/fireplace "complex" looks really old.

Gregg > The "hole of death" as Lynda calls it. The masons are moving much slower than the builder, thus the 4' by 8' hole in our living room. (March 16, 2007)

Gregg > A mock up of our fireplace and bake oven layout. Ours will most likely look like what I've done in number 2.
