Washington, D.C. - May 15-18, 2009 : We decided to take the kids to Washington, D.C. for a few days before the heat and crowds of the summer. We toured the Capitol, and visited the Air and Space, Natural History, National Archives, National Aquarium, National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, and the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool. Two days in a row we went to the Botanical Garden. . . that was everyone's favorite! We also got to see the White House, from a great distance. Come on. . . is it REALLY necessary to block off the Ellipsis and channel people to a very narrow strip of grass, and then park a police car right in the center of the scene to ruin photos?

Alpacas! : Okay, not really "travel", since they're only 25 miles away, but Oak Hill Alpaca ranch in Shapleigh, Maine, feels like a whole different world. (www.oakhill-ranch.com) The kids ran around with and petted the alpacas and Rex the dog, and got a fun hayride. The Ferreras made us feel more like old friends than customers whom they just met. It's definitely worth the trip if you ever find yourself in southwest Maine.
